Monday, November 21, 2022 –Hundreds of tenants have escaped death by a whisker after a five-storey building which they have been occupying collapsed moments after they had been evacuated.
The building located in Ruiru town Kiambu County went down under its own weight after 200 tenants had been evacuated.
A witness who spoke to Homenews.co.ke through phone explained that tension started building after several cracks were seen all round the building’s pillars.
“It had developed cracks on almost all its pillars. No body was taking this serious until yesterday Sunday when it worsened,” he recounted.
Later, Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi ordered fire-fighters together with other rescue operations to swing into action and evacuate tenants to a safe place.
Governor Wamatangi had earlier received a notice from the National Construction Authority NCA and the local police over the danger-in-waiting.
“Tenants can no longer stay in this house because its columns- which are supposed to support it have cracked. It cannot stand for long. If not for the neighbouring house that is supporting it, it could already be down,” Wamatangi was quoted by the media.
The incident puts to two the number of buildings that have collapsed in Kiambu County alone this week.
