Wednesday, November 15, 2023Azimio leader Raila Odinga has revisited the 2022 Nairobi election saying their Nairobi candidate Polycarp Igathe was not a favourite for the city residents.

Hailing the residents who have, for years been supporting his party, Mr. Odinga said he is happy to confirm that in Nairobi, most political seats went to the opposition.

In his Wednesday November 15 meeting held in Westlands and attended by a number of MPs and Senators, Odinga noted that though, ODM bagged so many seats, the governor seat was won by their competitors simply because he denied Tim Wanyonyi the ticket in favour of Jubilee Party’s Polycarp Igathe.

“We won the Senator, Woman Rep and Presidential seat, how could we lose the governor seat? Not possible,” Odinga said.

The Westland Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi of ODM was eyeing the coalition’s ticket. However, he stepped down, a move that now Odinga confeses was influenced by him.

“I regret it myself; I was told to tell Tim to step down. Tim was good enough, and he accepted. We wanted him to be a running mate but he refused. He said we should allow him to return to Westlands,” Mr. Odinga said to day.

Azimio unveiled Igathe (Jubilee Party), on April 22, 2022, as its gubernatorial candidate, and Philip Kaloki (Wiper) was his running mate a ticket that cost the opposition the seat.

“As you know there were other members of our coalition who had expressed the desire to become governors; one of them is Timothy Wanyonyi. Wanyonyi decided to step down from the governorship contest and go back and re-contest his seat as a member of the National Assembly for the Westlands Constituency,” Odinga recounted .

Unfortunately, Igathe, a corporate guru, would later emerge second in the race, where the current Governor Johnson Sakaja was declared the dullu-elected Nairobi Governor.

Currently ODM Party leadership is in a new mobilization tour across the country ahead of their grassroots party polls.
