Wednesday, August 10, 2022 –Suspended Mombasa and Kakamega gubernatorial elections have been set to take place on Tuesday August 23.
In an official statement of Tuesday August 9, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati explained that the directive was informed by a court decision.
Chebukati further clarified that six other affected areas – Kitui Rural, Kacheliba, Rongai and Pokot South constituencies and, Nyaki Wet and Kwa Njenga wards – will also be having their elections on the same date.
“The commission has resolved to hold by-elections for gubernatorial positions in Mombasa and Kakamega Counties in two weeks due to court orders,” partly read the statement.
In Eldas Constituency where gunmen invaded a tallying center before police officers put things in control, the exercise will be conducted today on Wednesday August 10.
“It will be cost-effective since the same equipment and personnel will be deployed with minimum training,” Mr. Chebukati noted.
According to the information provided by IEBC, it cancelled the listed gubernatorial polls due to mismatching information on the printed ballot papers; while in Rongai there was a mix-up in the MP ballot papers with those of Kuresoi South.
