Efforts to have next Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC officials in place are in top gear.
But even as people jostle for the position of commissioners, are they ready to handle the pressure? Many other things in the way our elections are handled in this country have not been addressed. The issues that affect smooth elections are yet to be tackled but we are fighting to have new commissioners in office. As a country, we are not serious. We think having new commissioners is the problem.
Let me remind this nation that even akina Akombe were good commissioners. Juliana Cherera with team were good commissioners as well but the environment and implementation of electoral laws including how systems are run is what was and still the challenge.
Having new monkies to replace old monkies in the same forest will not change the rot in the IEBC.
Again, just like former IEBC Chairman Isaac Hassan said, are those people who are applying for jobs at the IEBC okay in their minds? Is that a job to admire? Really?! I can’t even admire to move near the Anniversary Towers in Nairobi let alone entering inside. I am shocked people are fighting to become chairman and commissioners of IEBC. The name IEBC alone terrifies my nerves. Terrible!
But anyways, let me reveal the secret why anyone would want to work here despite the job looking similar with mortuary work.
Well, IEBC has a lot of free money from Western nations. Infact, the reason developed countries have a great say in who becomes president in every African nation is because of the amount of money they pump into the Commissions. They bring free billions into the IEBC as well as our courts in the guise of making them independent from their respective governments.
These billions is what makes people want to work in the IEBC. Is what makes someone fight hard to replace Chebukati despite all the bad history Chebukati has gone with. Remember, these billions are never accounted for and neither your government will ask you about it.
A local in Trans Nzoia area was on Friday heard shouting at vehicles carrying Chebukati’s body. She said, “Pelekeni yeye mbio mbio na azikwe kwa shimo mrefu asubuhi na mapema, hatumtaki na hatutaki arufu yake”.
