Monday, May 29, 2023 –Government has agreed to stop the ongoing recruitment exercise of the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC commissioners.
As part of their resolve to bring back Azimio la Umoja counterparts to the dialogue table after the bipartisan talks collapsed days ago, Tharaka Member of Parliament George Murugara, who is also the co-chairman of the bipartisan committee, has reached out to his counterpart, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, informing him that the coalition had ceded ground over some demands.
He assured that the government side had agreed to stop further recruitment exercise of the IEBC officers so that the matter can be handled in an amicable manner.
In that regard, both Muragura and Amollo will have to write a joint letter addressed to the selection panel asking it to halt the exercise.
The Muragura-led faction urged the opposition team to agree and come back in the discussion room so that to stop creating political anxiety around the country.
And addressing the issue surrounding IEBC servers, the co-chair stated that the electoral commission is, by law, supposed to make sure any data concerning elections is safe for a period not less than three years.
He therefore noted that, together with his co-chair, they will pen a letter to the IEBC to remind them of the need to make sure the servers remained untampered with for legal reasons.
Both Muragura and Otiende Amollo are, therefore, expected to meet first and agree on those modalities so that to resume the talks which had stopped for seven days.
Azimio had pulled out of the talks after they learnt that their counterparts from the ruling side were taking them for granted.
Raila Odinga would then issue a firm-worded presser detailing reasons that led to their pulling out. Among the reasons he stated included lack of goodwill saying Ruto’s side had taken the talks as another way of managing the political situation in the country.
Mr. Odinga also claimed that, the team from the other side was being supervised by more than one person as they seemed to have conflicting stands within themselves.
