Wednesday, August 3, 2022 –Wafula Chebukati, chairman Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC, has confirmed loss of important IEBC equipment.
Allaying fears that the body had lost a total of 3,000 KIEMS kits, Chebulati clarified that what had actually lost were BVR machines usually used to register voters.
On Wednesday August 3, the chairman responded to the fears from both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja members who had claimed that the voting equipment KIEMS kit had disappeared into wrongs hands.
But Chebukati has calmed the storm saying they had put enough measures into place and that should any kit get into wrong hands, it will still be hard for anyone with wrong intentions to use.
“This report is false and misleading. The Auditor General’s report made reference to BVR kits and not KIEMS kits. BVR kits are used for voter registration and not voting. The Commission procured 15,000 BVR kits in 2012 that have technically reached the end of life.
“The Commission keeps an inventory of all its kits and in the event of any loss, the kit will be blocked from doing any transaction on the system,” partly read the statement.
He also moved in to reduce fears that Form 34A always used in tabulating presidential results was subject to external manipulation.
“These measures include but are not limited to visible and invisible security features, polling station data personalisation, barcodes and QR codes,” he noted.
Chebukati, however, said that any problem on presidential results can only be interfered with by presiding officer on the ground and not the national tallying center.
He affirmed that results will be coming straight from the tallying center and on arrival at the Bomas Grounds, they will be announced as they are without adding or removing a comma.
