Friday, June 9, 2023 –Lang’ata Member of Parliament Felix Odiwuor aka Jalang’o has thrown fellow content creators under the bus over the Finance Bill that proposes 15 percent tax on their earnings.
In a video clip shared on Ghafla Kenya Twitter Handle, MP Jalang’o says it will be hard for him to defend the creative industry on the proposed taxes and that the only remaining option is for them to be ready to start paying taxes to Kenya Kwanza administration.
He goes ahead to narrate how he used to make millions on his social media pages including YouTube. Jalang’o also mentions Kabi wa Jesus and Habil Mutua both who make millions and drive fuel guzzlers on the streets of Nairobi.
“I was one of them and I have been making money as a content creator, So nijitee nikiwa wapi? My friend Kabi wa Jesus makes a lot. Where they live, bought Range Rover for his wife.
“Are these the people who you tell me they should not pay taxes? I looked at Habil Mutua’s page which had Range Rover Discovery 4 that costs about 6 million shillings,” Jalang’o narrated.
He stated that it is now not easy to convince the recently constituted panel that there is no money in the creative industry.
He firmly said that William Ruto’s government will definitely tax content creators no matter what they say because they brought this problem for themselves by flaunting their lifestyles on social media.
In a nutshell, the first time MP, who went to bed with government, said that the government will not stop their pursuit of the 15% content creator tax because they see many influencers bragging about new cars, houses and trips around the world.
