Thursday, September 21, 2023 –Azimio la Umoja co-principal Martha Karua has differed with Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna over the suspension of UDA Party Nominated Senator.
Today Thursday September 21, Karua sharply differed with the Senate for upholding the suspension of Orwoba from the house over gross misconduct.
Orwoba was suspended on Wednesday, September 20 from Parliament for a period of 6 months, for making ‘unsubstantiated’ sexual harassment claims.
Karua Faults the Senate
But in a statement made Karua who is former Constitutional Lawyer, the suspension on Orwoba was not only unfair but also excessive.
Karua stated that what the Senate ought to have done is to dismiss the charges she is facing on grounds of lack of concrete evidence.
She decried mistreatment of female political leaders in the country saying the male-dominated Senate was hellbent on frustrating women leaders.
“Manifestly unfair and excessive. Senate which is male dominated is telling women including women senators dare you complain of sexual harassment we shall exterminate you,” Karua said in a statement.
“This is patriarchy silencing women on matters of sexual harassment,” Karua wrote in her statement seen by Homenews.Co.ke
Orwoba Speaks on Sifuna
She was saying this just hours after embattled Orwoba recorded herself decrying injustice in the Senate and in which she singled out Senator Sifuna for claiming that she failed to show up to defend herself before the Senate when she was required.
Orwoba, however, said whatever Sifuna had said in the Senate was not true and that it was also unfair to discuss her conduct in the plenary before showing up in person.
Orwoba was dramatically suspended following her claims on sexual advances by a senior Senate official, what Karua now says it is important to investigate the claims so that to find out if at all they were true or not.
Senate Committee’s decision
Senate Powers and Privileges committee suspended MP Orwoba from the House until February next year over alleged gross misconduct.
The dreaded disciplinary committee is chaired by speaker Amason Kingi and her absence means she will miss privileges and perks.
The panel delivered the harsh punishment after the lawmaker, reportedly, failed to honour its invites and summons to defend herself against damning allegations.
