Saturday, May 20, 2023 – Kenya Bureau of Standards KEBS has assured the nation that they are upto the task to making sure only standard goods are sold to consumers.

Addressing the matter following the recent release of contaminated Sugar into the market despite KEBS warning, Acting KEBS Managing Director Esther Ngari, on Friday, May 19, allayed fears that goods on shelves could be unsafe for human use.

Talking to the media on Friday, Ms Ngari also said that her agency was vigilant in making sure every health is protected.

She mentioned both high-level professionalism and integrity in their line of duty to ensure that condemned goods are not released to the public by rogue staff at KEBS.

“Because Kenyans are depending on the Kenya Bureau of Standards to ensure that we can give them what is safe and what they can depend on. So, the most important thing is high integrity in all areas of operations,” Ms Ngari stated.

The news MD also noted that they are now doing a scaled-up testing exercise to make sure no bad foodstuff finds its way into the shop.

“We have always come in to ensure that we are on time to test whatever is in the market and whatever is going to our consumers because at the end of the day, we have to protect our consumers,” she added.

Besides scaling up operations, Chairman of the National Standards Council, Jeremiah Kinyua, maintained that plans are in advanced stage to increase laboratories across the country to enhance quick and accurate testing process.

Mr. Kinyua further assured Kenyans that KEBS had laid out plans to trace some of the goods hitting shops and supermarkets before undergoing required standard tests.
