Kenya Kwanza MPs Want Subsidies Back

Wednesday, November 8, 2023 –A section of Kenya Kwanza leaders now want President William Ruto to re-introduce fuel subsidy so that to save their popularity on the ground.

In their Parliamentary Group meeting held at the Statehouse on Tuesday November 7, a source privy to the meeting, divulged how this proceeded and what the head of State told them.

The source noted that most of them asked the Commander-in-Chief to reconsider the return of fuel subsidy because their popularity with the masses was weakening by day due to the high cost of living.

They argued that the current difficult economic status affecting the country had portrayed them as leaders who had already abandoned the ‘Hustler narrative’ what is not going well with their supporters.

“The MPs openly raised their concerns that if fuel prices and other basic commodities keep rising, then they are risking their popularity heading to 2027,” an anonymous source shared with the media.

The lawmakers who converged in hundreds at the Statehouse said it was now clear to their supporters in their Constituencies that, if something is not done today, people to blame are the leaders who rose to power through the Hustler narrative.

But in his response to the MPs, President Ruto cited the recently-introduced fuel stabilization fund as a temporary and quick remedy as opposed to the return of subsidies which he struck out immediately he took charge.

Ruto, at that time, argued that the billions which Uhuru’s regime had set aside as subsidies had been looted to peoples’ pockets.

And yesterday, he said there is nothing much he can do to stop the increasing fuel prices because it is as a result of global factors which Kenya is part of.

Ruto also said to them that they(MPs) do not have to be popular all the time so long as they are popular ‘where and when it matters’.

He used the opportunity to ask them to support Haiti exercise even as some MPs remain skeptical on the mission.

Another meeting has been scheduled next week to particularly discuss fuel prices and other rising matters of concern.
