Wednesday, March 16, 2022 –Keroche Breweries Limited and Kenya Revenue Authority KRA have struck a working deal that will see the former repay outstanding taxes in chunks.
An official statement from the taxman on Wednesday March 16, indicated that the brewer had been given an affordable payment plan to meet in 24 months’ time.
The two parties agreed and signed the payment plan on March 14 even after they had differed for weeks over the same.
The multi-million Naivasha-based plant owner accepted to settle the debt in two years stretching from this year January.
“The addendum agreement which sets the stage for the reopening for production of the Naivasha based brewery will see Keroche settle an undisputed tax amount of sh 957,000,000.00 over a period of twenty-four (24) months starting from January 2022,” the statement read in part.
The taxman, according to the statement, had also agreed to lift agency notices which had been issued earlier against the business-lady. This being part of the efforts by KRA in supporting the local market.
“The signed addendum agreement will also see the KRA lift agency notices issued to 36 Banks. The KRA seeks to encourage dialogue and amicable resolution of tax disputes,” the statement also read.
The owner, Ms Tabitha Karanja, who had accused government of sabotaging her businesses, had claimed that the State had issued an advisory to 36 banks not to lend them(Keroche) any money, a move she argued had greatly affected them financially.
She also tried to link her ongoing woes to politics after she had joined United Democratic Alliance UDA Party to vie for Nakuru Senate seat.
