Saturday, April 1, 2023 –A cloud of grief engulfed Kibra slum after a family lost their newborn in teargas smoke lobbed by the police during protests.
On Thursday March 27, hundreds of women living in the slum went on their knees; some lifting their hands up in surrender over the increased effect of teargas to theirfamilies.
And now it has emerged that on the same day, Thursday, during the last Azimio mass protests, Joyce Kemunto was left in deep agony, after she lost her baby whose body is now lying at the City Mortuary.
“Precious hata nilikuwa hata sijampiga picha,” she says as tears rolls down her cheeks and links the death to police brutality in the area.
Citizen Digital reported that, before the protests on Thursday March 27, Precious was full of life, but things took a turn when police lobbed teargas in the air.
“Vile ilirushwa huko kwa mabati ikaanguka ndani ya nyumba watoto wakaanza kulia. Nikampanguza na maji, nikaona ako poa lakini alikuwa bado analialia,” Kemunto told the media.
Joyce was hopeful that her first aid efforts would help save the effects of the teargas but her baby’s health continued deteriorating every minute.
On Friday March 31, Kibra area remained peaceful following a far cry from Thursday’s scenes that forced women to come out of their homes, their arms raised up, in surrender after the effects of teargas forced them out.
Police on the other hand, seemed to understand the plight but still went on with lobbing teargas anyhow during the protests.
