Friday, June 7, 2024 –Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary CS Kithure Kindiki has said those working to bring back the one-man-one vote-one shilling policy will fail again.
In a hard-hitting statement he shared on Friday June 7 evening, Prof Kindiki indicated that the proponents of the one-shilling mantra do not know the negative lasting effects this can bring to the nations.
Kindiki argued that the cliché sounds good when spoken and on paper but, scientifically, it falls flat on its own weight.
“The clichĂ© is neither a scientific principle nor is it an economic model of any kind. It is a mantra picked from casual banter and will fall flat when juxtaposed with the constitutional ideals and values upon which our nation is founded”.
The CS further said, every part of Kenya is entitled to prosperity not alone or at the expense of any other part of Kenya but rather, as part of the whole. The destiny and success of Kenya is inextricably linked to the destiny and success of each part of Kenya.
In an earlier statement, he had remarked that the calls for the one-man-one shilling amounts to ethnic mobilisation and incitement; what this country has been running away from and cannot afford to go back to again.
“The mobilisation and incitement of ethnic communities against each other is a barbaric, cruel and dangerous political misadventure that poses grave danger to our Country’s future.
“Kenya’s ugly past experience with ethnically brewed violence should jolt all of us, whatever tongue we speak and whichever part of the Country we come from, to resist and to name and shame the propagators of ethnic hate and the “us” versus “them” narrative that nearly destroyed Kenya in December and January of 2007=2008,” added Prof Kindiki.
He thanked his boss President William Ruto for addressing this concern in his latest State of the Nation speech where he(Ruto) warned those attempting to divide through ethnicity.
This statement from Kindiki coming at the time, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asked those against the one-shilling mantra to try and preach their gospel in Central Region which is keen to have their fair share of the national cake and nothing else.
On this matter, Raila Odinga has joined hands with DP Gachagua to champion for the one man-one shilling distribution policy which Odinga says should, in fact, be anchored into law.
