Thursday, October 24, 2024 –The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) plans to roll out a WhatsApp bot that will allow users of the popular messaging service to create electronic tax invoices and remit.
According to the taxman latest report, this will increase voluntary tax compliance, particularly among small business owners around the country.
KRA’s chief manager for the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) at the Domestic Taxes Department, Hakamba Wangwe, stated that the programme is presently undergoing testing and should be implemented by the end of this fiscal year, or latest by July 2025.
“The implication of this programme is the simplification of tax processes. With the bot, you will be able to generate a tax invoice as easily as you can send a message, a video, or a photo through WhatsApp,” Wangwe said, as reported by NTV Kenya.
According to KRA, the project aims to reduce tax evasion, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs).
A tech blog in the country reported that it will further streamline tax invoicing through the use of the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System.
Senior Advisor in the Office of the President, Moses Kuria, a week ago, hinted at government plans to tax small businesse enterprises through their mobile banking accounts.
Among the platforms targeted are the Business Till, M-Pesa and Pay Bill accounts among others as measures by the Treasury to expand tax bracket for a larger collection intensifies.
