Friday, November 5, 2021 –Ex-Laikipia Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurker has today been sentenced to a one year jail term without fine for assaulting a woman.
The historic ruling was delivered by Senior Principal Magistrate Helen Onkwani on Friday November 5 where the accused was not given the usual option for fine.
The charge sheet read that the ex-legislator slapped a woman on November 21, 2016 at Harambee House in Nairobi after a short verbal altercation.
The politician allied to Orange Democratic Movement ODM Party was reported to have landed a heavy slap on the left side of fellow MP Sarah Okerere, kicked her on her lower abdomen leading to injuries.
The Magistrate argued that the ruling will serve as a learning lesson for others who may have similar intentions in future just because they think they wield much power.
“I have also considered the fact that the accused person is a first offender but I note that the accused is a leader who should be a good example to others. I hereby proceed to sentence the accused person to serve 1-year imprisonment,” the magistrate ruled.
Lempurkel was found guilty after the prosecution side assembled tight evidence which proved beyond reasonable doubts that the politician was involved in the crime contrary to Section 251 of the Penal Code.
