Wednesday, January 24, 2024 –Government has warned citizens against feeding on market fish from Lake Nakuru.
Mining Cabinet Secretary CS Salim Mvurya, on Wednesday January 25, made this announcement saying the fish from Lake Nakuru is harmful for human consumption.
He was speaking this in Embu County where he elaborated further that the fish had been confirmed to contain 32 percent arsenic metal which can harm human life.
The CS added that Arsenic is a metal found in nature and it’s toxic and historically used as a poison for humanity.
It has industrial applications but remains dangerous due to harmful consequences and side effects it causes on human body.
Mvurya noted that the findings had been reached at after thorough scientific tests conducted on the fish from the lake.
Due to that, the CS said he had come up with a team dubbed multi-agency team which is looking into the crisis, urgently.
The team will comprise the Department of Fisheries and Blue Economy, the Environment Department and other government agencies that can help solve the problem.
“In the last Cabinet that we went in Sagana, I made a presentation to confirm that the fish in Lake Nakuru is not fit for human consumption,” CS Mvurya stated.
World Health Organisation says the mentioned metal can cause skin lesions, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and Cancer of the skin and internal organs.
In 2021, research carried out by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute KEMRI discovered that the fish contained dangerous chemicals. This led to the Ministry of Agriculture issuing a warning to Kenyans.
