Thursday, June 8, 2023 –Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has sensed danger on the hundreds of newly-admitted lawyers in the country.

Reacting through his social media pages on Thursday June 8, the renowned senior counsel said, before corruption is eradicated from the judiciary, it is going to be difficult for these 800 plus advocates to prosper in their career lines.

Nasir added that, the corridors of justice in the country had been filled with corrupt lawyers, court officials among them judges who make cases difficult for complainants or the accused.

“All these young newly admitted advocates 800 plus were admitted to the Bar yesterday) will prosper and help their families and country if we remove all corrupt and thieving Judges and Magistrates in our judiciary…if we don’t, their career will be short and miserable,” he commented.

During their admission to the bar on Tuesday June 6, Chief Justice Martha Koome indicated that the new advocates should be relentless in their pursuit of justice and urged them to play a role in empowering the most vulnerable in the society and enable them to access justice.

She also stated that the new team should seek out those who have been silenced and give them a voice by empowering the marginalised, the neglected and the oppressed.

“They must stand up for what is right, even when it is inconvenient or unpopular,” she advised.

The CJ added that, together with the judicial system, they must strive to create a legal profession that is not only respected for its intellectual rigour and professional excellence, but also revered for its compassion and commitment to social justice.

And to make this journey a successful one, Judge Koome revealed that she recently inaugurated the Chief Justices’ Young Advocates Mentorship Programme to help new lawyers find a footing in the profession.

This Pro Bono Legal Aid Scheme will allow young advocates to earn a modest stipend as they represent vulnerable persons.
