Monday, February 19, 2024 –For one to become African Union AU Chairman, a Master’s Degree is a must have under the requirements.
What this, therefore, means is that, any candidate running to become chairman must be a holder of the papers from a recognized institution.
Apart from the Maters Degree, the candidate must also have relevant experience and history, fluent in, atleast, one of the AU’s languages as well as a solid proof of transformational leadership.
The official AU languages are Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili and any other African language.
According to the AU requirement list, the Master’s Degree must be in Law, International Relations, Economics, Diplomacy, Management, Business Administration, Political Science, Social Sciences or a closely related field from a recognised institution.
Additionally, having a PHD in the same field becomes an added advantage.
Kenyawide.com, has perused through what Raila meets and discovered that Odinga is a holder of an MSc (Master of Science) in Mechanical Engineering from Germany and he will, during the exercise, have to show his 20 years relevant professional experience.
“At least ten (10) years served in a progressively senior leadership role(s) preferably in an intergovernmental organisation or national government/public service, international or regional institution,” AU says in its requirements documents.
The Azimio leader, before the selection panel, who is vying for the seat must demonstrate a record of setting clear standards for accountability, probity, value for money, risk management and zero tolerance to fraud and corruption in any institution.
Commenting on this, renowned lawyer Danstan Omari told K24 Tv station, on Monday February 19 morning, that Odinga will not succeed in this race.
He pointed out how AU had already installed President William Ruto to a top management seat; making it hard for another Kenyan to be appointed to lead the body, again.
“It is unfortunate for Kenyans that Raila Odinga will not get the AU seat. If the AU wanted Raila to get that seat, they could not have appointed Ruto to be the person to preside over the elections of the AU Commission,” Omari noted.
Omari, further said, by AU appointing Ruto, this meant it was done with Kenya and Odinga should be persuaded to drop his ambitions this early.
President Ruto was, recently, announced to take over from Rwandan Paul Kagame as leader of politics and institutional reforms.
The head of state will be mandated with the responsibility of providing political leadership and vision and completing the Comprehensive Institutional Reform Initiative that kicked off in 2016.
