Wednesday, October 23, 2024 –Lawyers have continued to recognise seasoned Kenyan lawyer Dr. John Khaminwa following his court drama with former Attorney General Githu Muigai on Tuesday.
Khaminwa, who is representing embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was, on Tuesday, involved in fierce exchange with Prof. Muigai on standing orders in court today.
Lawyer Muigai had stood to advise Khaminwa on why he should respect professors and senior court counsels, only to be told by Khaminwa that he is younger in matters court and he should keep off when he(Khaminwa) is on the floor.
“That is correct but Dr. Khaminwa, the standing orders of the court are clear that senior counsels have a preference when it comes to court proceedings. So sit down,” Githu Muigai scolded.
“No! I am not sitting down because I started practicing law way back when you were still breastfeeding,” Khaminiwa responded sending the entire court into panic mode and laughter.
Lawyers who have been keenly following the proceedings sided with the veteran Lawyer saying his experience in matters court and law is unmatched and should be respected by all current crop of lawyers.
“Dr. John Khaminwa has been the most consistent lawyer in Kenya in his entire legal practice. He has always stood for the Rule of Law & Constitutionalism. He has never betrayed his beliefs for money.
“He has sacrificed his career & money for representing people the System of the day thought were Subversive. No other lawyer in Kenya can hold a candle on Khaminwa,” remarked Lawyer Donald Kipkorir.
The lawyer also noted that Khaminwa stands atop all lawyers in Kenya and to disrespect him is proof of inadequacy.
“Khaminwa has never looked for political patronage to practice law. Khaminwa is the only lawyer who represents all that go to him irrespective of their tribe, Creed, gender or political persuasion. He sits atop the Legal Practice without peer,” said Kipkorir, further.
He was supported by lawyers Ahmednasir Abdullahi and Willis Otieno who poked holes into the professional titles held by the likes of Lawyer Tom Ojienda who was among those pointed out for showing disrespect to other juniors in the court.
At some point, Lawyer Elisha Ongoya was heard asking the judge to pressure Prof. Tom Ojienda to withdraw a remark that did not sit well with him(Mr. Ongoya).
“Let my learned senior withdraw the remark he made first because he made it in my presence. I also deserve professional dignity,” Ongoya p;leaded with the court.
Ojienda would rise to tender a withdrawal before Ongoya continued with his submission.
