Thursday, March 18 2021 -Exiled Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu who last year fled to Belgium has hinted on his return to the country juts hours after his tormentor John Magufuli was announced dead.
Lissu – the Chadema Party leader – has said he will return to the country but if the incoming regime will first release the people they arrested for politics and two if all those who went to exile are assured of a new lease of life.
He challenged the Vice President Samia Suluhu to act differently from his boss so that the peace of the country can be realized.
He challenged the incoming head of State to make sure her new government accounts for every lost life as well as for any distressed hearts from the rival camp who are not sure of their life upto now.
“This is the time to open a new chapter for our country. This is an opportunity for national reconciliation which had been made impossible…I’ll go back to Tanzania, but my going is part of what I’m calling for….my return, and the return of many others who are in exile even in Kenya…it is time for Tanzanians to sit together to account for all the evils of these past 5 years, because you cannot have reconciliation without truth,” he told KTN News.
He promised to lead fellow leaders in the opposition to officially write a letter to the next government making their demands very clear.
“Now that Magufuli has passed, we will write a public letter to the government in which I and my colleagues will set out our position going forward, and our position is that we cannot afford to continue with Magufulism without Magufuli, meaning that the country must change. We must extend a hand to all those who were persecuted and had to flee the country like myself, we have to free political prisoners, we must stop these human rights abuses, we must free our media,” he added.
He also promised to keep fighting for justice and good governance in Tanzania for teh restoration of human rights.
Lissu said he is confident in VP Samia since they served together in Parliament and that her style is so different from that of Magufuli.
“I know her (Suluhu). She’s a completely different ball game from Magufuli. The rational choice that is available for her is to chart a new course for the country; to extend a hand to those of us who were victimised by Magufuli in an effort to bring the nation together. She will need to do a lot of work in order to repair the damage done by President Magufuli, internally as well as in our relations with other nations,” he stated.
He however, faulted her for releasing misleading information on the real cause of death of Mr. Magufuli. Lissu wants her to tell the country the truth so that citizens can start observing Covid-19 control measures.
