Thursday, February 29, 2024 -New rules at the African Union Commission AU in Addis Ababa Ethiopia could bar Raila Odinga from running for the chairman seat.
AU has new technical proposals that could easily see the Kenyan former prime minister fail to meet; if adopted very soon.
These changes are aimed at reshuffling the criteria used to reach and allow a candidate to vie for the coveted position in the AU. This criterion requires that any candidate fronted should not come from a member country which has had a chairman or deputy, before.
Despite the fact that this is East Africa chance, according to the AU Constitution, it may also be difficult for the part of the continent, especially, owing to the fact that Kenya has had a deputy before.
Only Tanzania can meet this demand if the changes are ratified and implemented this season in which Odinga is vying.
Therefore, should the heads of State from the 44 countries adopt the proposal, the changes will automatically knockout Mr.Odinga.
Already, Kenya just like Rwanda, has held the deputy position and that these positions of both the chairman and his deputy are rotational.
Nonetheless, only one vote against the decision-making body at the AU could boost Odinga’s bid to vie. As we speak, Ruto who is among the decision-makers at the AU can decline the new changes and hand Raila a ticket to vie.
Ruto and Uganda’s Museveni have both agreed to support Oding’s bid in the race.
Azimio la Umoja leader has upto April to present his credentials at the AU Commission for interviews.
