Mobiles –Safaricom’s M-Pesa service is upgrading to allow its clientele to start running advertisements on the highly consumed platform.
Up to now, Safaricom has done remarkable upgrades on the M-Pesa App so that to expand their services for many businesses using the M-Pesa platform in the country.
Management has confirmed that they are trying to emulate what happens on Aliplay App where more than one billion users are benefiting. And to make this a reality, Safaricom’s parent company Vodacom Group has already entered into an agreement with the Ant Group from China. Ant Group runs Aliplay which is a popular online payment platform in China.
Safaricom disclosed that Aliplay App is expected to push Kenya’s M-Pesa gain some features to help it also built an extra advertisement revenue source on it.
“In the case of Kenya and Tanzania in time we will start to get merchants to expose their products into the M-Pesa app through the mini app capability,” said Vodacom’s chief executive Shameel Joosub.
“The concept is that of course the more learnings and the more stuff we can develop in South Africa we will then look to agree with Alipay to expand some of those services into the international markets on a case-by-case basis,” he added.
If well implemented, Safaricom will gain massive advertisement revenue stream to complement their widely used M-Pesa App which is currently the biggest revenue collector for the dominant Telco.
