Wednesday, June 14, 2023 –It has emerged that Paul Mackenzie’s accomplices in court are on a hunger strike that could turn suicidal.
Homenews.co.ke has learnt that the Shakahola cult leader Paul Mackenzie, his wife Rhodha Mumbua and 16 other co-accused persons have been staging a hunger strike while in police custody.
And on Wednesday June 14, the 18 suspects were presented at the Shanzu Law Court in Mombasa for a hearing on whether to extend their detention.
As they alighted from the police vehicles, a number of them appeared extremely frail, unable to walk into the courtroom.
Additionally, one of the suspects could not sit upright even with support from those who tried to help him stand up.
Police said the suspects have been on a 7-day hunger strike during their detention in various police stations.
Last week, police were granted more time to detain Mackenzie and his co-accused pending investigations and to allow the hearing of an application seeking a further 60-day detention.
“Prosecution through Coast Deputy Regional Head, Jami Yamina, told the court that there were compelling reasons to deny the suspects bail, citing the complexity of the investigations,” the ODPP noted.
So far, details from Shakahola indicate that over 300 bodies have since been retrieved from the forest; these being victims of Mackenzie’s radical preachings on the importance of fasting to death so that to meet Jesus Christ.
Speaking on the matter after visiting Shakahola scene, Interior Cabinet Secretary CS Kithure Kindiki warned that all those who will be found responsible for the killings, will not be released from jail.
