Friday, August 2, 2024 ––Cleophas Malala has been replaced by Hassan Omar Hassan in the new purge taking place in the ruling party following a spate of wrangles.
The changes coming just two days after goons believed to be funded by Mr.Malala invaded the United Democratic Alliance Party headquarters along Ngong Road Nairobi and attacked a rival faction led by Lawyer Joe Khalande who had earlier announced himself as the party secretary general.
This saw Cecile Mbarire, the party chairlady, move with speed to quell the chaos promising to have a NEC meeting to iron out the challenges.
“UDA Party has properly constituted organs and one cannot come and claim himself or herself as a holder of any position without following the due process. We therefore want to condemn that act on Tuesday with the strongest words possible.
“Likewise, we are a party guided by the rule of law. We are a party who have structures of how conflicts are to be resolved and we cannot allow goons to be used to settle disputes. We are likewise taking this very seriously and on Friday after our emergency meeting we will announce the actions to be taken,” said Governor Mbarire in her capacity as party chairperson.
It is through their Thursday August 1 meeting that the recommendations to oust Cleophas Malala from the top party leadership was reached. And in his place was taken by EALA Member of Parliament Hassan Omar on an interim basis.
Malala’s name was immediately revoked by the NEC sitting in Nairobi on the grounds of high misconduct.
“Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan takes over as the Secretary General on an interim basis. The appointment of Hon Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is revoked. These changes are effective immediately,” the statement said.
Malala was made the party secretary general after a successful 2022 general campaigns which saw Dr. William Ruto who was by then very close to the former Kakamega County senator appoint him as party official.
All a long, however, Malala has faced criticism from key party members who have accused him of gross misconduct and insubordination.
Among those who have been unhappy with his leadership style and ability are senator Boni Khalwale, Woman Representative Gladys Boss Shollei and MP Oscar Sudi.
Khalwale was among the few leaders from UDA to send congratulations messages to the new Sec. Gen. Hassan Omar Hassan.
