Tuesday, October 10, 2023 –First lady Mama Rachel Ruto led the country in marking the first Utamaduni Day in an event held at the Bomas of Kenya today Tuesday October 10.
As President William Ruto left to Uganda in the morning, his wife remained behind to preside over the national event that also saw Public Service CS Moses Kuria, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, several legislators, and government officials attend.
“Before I continue, allow me to pass my warm greetings from the President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Ruto,” Mama Rachel shared.
She seized the opportunity top ask every patriotic Kenyan to celebrate diversity, morals and traditionsof the country as was envisaged by the founding fathers.
“This is a day to unite and rejoice in our ethnic diversity, traditions, languages, and customs that together create a magnificent tapestry of unity within our diversity,” she added.
Addressing at the national event, Public service CS Moses Kuria who was in the famous Kikuyu traditional outfit said there is a bill to protect Kenya’s rich culture from external interference.
“For the first time now, we have a bill to protect our culture, our cabinet approved that Kenya joins the UNESCO protocol of 1944 for the protection of culture, so those foreign people and foreign nations usually come here rating our artifacts, emblems, heritage, ushanga, our culture we are saying now that that is going to be a thing of the past” CS Moses Kuria commented in his speech.
October 10 was first named Moi Day after Kenya’s second president, Daniel arap Moi. It would later be renamed Huduma Day before being changed again in 2020 to Utamaduni Day following the Statute Miscellaneous Amendments Act No. 29 0f 2020.
Unlike other Kenyan National Holidays marked by a colourful military-packed arrangement, Kenyans celebrated the event uniquely. As the national celebrations took place in the Bomas of Kenya, satellite events were equally held countrywide in many counties.
Ruto is in Uganda to resolve border issues with his counterpart Yoweri Museveni.
