Friday, October 7, 2022 –Monday October 10 will be a national public holiday. Interiors Cabinet Secretary Doctor Fred Matiang’i has announced.
Matiang’i made the notification on Friday October 7 saying the day will be special to mark culture and traditions of the country.
“It is hereby notified that Monday, October 10, 2022, will be a public holiday (Utamaduni Day).
“All citizens are reminded to honour the day by recognising and celebrating the rich cultural diversity of Kenya in a manner that promotes our unity, national cohesion, and economic progress,” the outgoing CS directed.
The ex-super CS attributed the directive to Sections 2 (1) and 4 and Part One of the Schedule of Public Holidays Act (Cap 110).
In his 2017 ruling, High Court Judge George Odunga observed that scrapping Moi Day as a national public day would be unethical hence its renaming to now Utamaduni Day.
Matiang’i’s announcement is coming at the time he is already replaced by Prof Kithure Kindiki who the new president picked to take over the Interior docket.
The official handing over of the office together with other State offices is yet to happen.
