Saturday, April 15, 2023 – Eight unions, among them the Kenya Medical Practitioners could down tools in about 12 counties around the country.

Making the strike announcement on Friday, April 14, the unions’ bosses announced that they would down their tools in 12 counties starting next Wednesday, April 19.

The eight bodies also include Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), Kenya Union of Clinical Officers(KUCO), Kenya National Union of Pharmaceutical Technologists, Kenya Health Professional Society, Kenya Union of Nutritionists and Dieticians.

They indicated that the main aim of planning to go slow is to send a strong message to the employer over lack of enough working resources.

“We regret to inform you that our members will not be able to attend work as scheduled as of Wednesday, April 19, 2023,” read part of the statement.

In the press briefing, they blamed President William Ruto for failing to honour their March 2013 salaries.

“Occasional delays in salary payment have left us in a difficult financial situation. As a result, we are unable to meet our daily needs, including transportation, food, and accommodation expenses,” read part of the statement.

They further blamed the William Ruto administration for not remitting the statutory deductions as stipulated in law.

“We recognise that the provision of quality healthcare is critical to our nation, and we remain committed to fulfilling our obligations to patients and the community at large,” the eight unions underscored.

The medics reminded the government that they too have needs as well as families that depend on them and, therefore, have to be paid their dues in time.

They added that their profession is among the riskiest and which have to be prioritised by any government.
