Eight years ago, Millicent graduated in Architectural Studies with a First Class Honors at the Nairobi University.
Millicent was a bright student in class. She was among the top students in class all through. She joined the prestigious campus and did quite well too. However, after graduation, she couldn’t secure any good job in her field of study. The best she could afford was to become a cleaner in a city restaurant.
“My parents had to sell everything we had at home to secure me a course. It is eight years now but I have not started supporting them. I even fear returning home because I can’t help them. I have been stressed a lot,” she wrote on Facebook.
As a cleaner, Millicent has been earning Ksh 8,000 every month with no off days. She is not alone, Richard, a fellow graduate from Maseno University, is also a victim of poor job market in Kenya. He has been moving from one job to another in the Mjengo industry. He is a Medical student graduate.
“I feel highly wasted. This is my eighth year jobless. I have a family of two girls and are all in school. What kind of life is this really?” he posted on his social platforms a year ago.
These are not the only cases in Kenya. Obviously, politics has really messed up the country. Leaders go into power to enrich themselves. They can promise young men heaven but end up giving them hell.
Well, luckily, those graduates who have been left wallowing in poverty like Millicent (25) and Richard (27) couldn’t give up with life. They pushed on working hard so that, one day, things could work for them.
