Met Dpt Explains Current hot sun and High Temps

Wednesday, February 21, 2024 –The country is currently experiencing hot sun and increased daytime temperatures.

This, according to scientists, is because of the recent El Nino rains that seems to have calmed down hence giving room to another hot season that may take a full month or two to resume normalcy.

Meteorological department has explained this heatwave saying, it is purely caused by high pressure system forming in the aftermath of El Nino period.

“The cool wind from the north blows southwards, causing warm air in the south to rise upwards towards the north, resulting in the current heatwave.

“There is a wave of energy that is passing through, so waves of the extreme temperatures that we are feeling would make people start thinking we have a heat wave,” Robert Ouma, a Kenya Meteorological Department official based at the University of Nairobi disclosed.

Ouma expounded on this saying, in this period of the year, the pressure systems of the North are becoming more intense than pressure systems to the South, basically because the sun is more to the South than to the North and so “we have our rain belt pushed to the South”.

This is usually characterised by a bit higher temperatures; what he described as normal occurrences of the weather.

Mr. Ouma noted that, almost every part of the nation is currently facing the same high temperatures including those currently with rains.

“Our temperatures in Nairobi for example are usually 24 or 25 degrees centigrade so when it goes to 28 it starts feeling warm, currently we have been experiencing up to 30 degrees centigrade and that is very very warm,” Mr. Ouma argued in a Tv interview, today.

But from March heading into April, he predicted, Kenyans will again experience cold temperatures that will also be associated with average rains.
