Thursday, July 7, 2022 –A larger percentage of politicians in the country are below average. Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC Commissioner Prof Abdi Guliye has said.
Speaking this during the IEBC press conference held on Thursday, July 7, Prof Guliye cautioned Kenyans against glorifying politicians as if they are small gods on earth.
In a blow by blow account, the elections commissioner noted that most of the politicians who come for clearance to run for office have little qualifications; some with questionable papers which can only describe them as ‘average and below’.
He argued that these group of persons lack intelligence with most notorious ones making so much noise anytime they open their mouth to speak.
“We live in a country where elections are a do or die and that is where the problem is. We have glorified politicians to the extent that everybody wants to become a politician.
“When we clear the candidates they are at the bottom ladder of their IQ levels if you look at their certificates,” Guliye stated.
Guliye also told the media that it is unfortunate that leadership in the country had been opened to just anyone with anything that looks like a paper.
The removal of the Degree requirement for Members of Parliament, Guliye reasoned was deliberately orchestrated by power-hungry people who have turned out to be just mediocre in legislation process.
He was saying this amid storm in their department over plans to rig elections in favour of UDA Party leader, William Ruto.
