Tuesday, September 24, 2024 –Members of Parliament are up in arms with the Judiciary following the decision by the courts to merge CDF with other development funds into one kitty.
Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo, while addressing the Assembly today Tuesday September 24, said she will strongly defend the fund because it is the only notable development channel for the MPs and which has been changing lives in every corner of the country.
“Bash me but as an intellectual and bright lawyer, this is one thing I will defend to my grave. We will fight to make sure it goes nowhere”.
She firmly stated that MPs only have CDF as the only fund to develop and educate the less-privileged and, therefore, taking it away will deprive many their rights to education.
“The only fund you can rely on that is changing lives in CDF. My own Constituency we have moved from mud wall to permanent structures. That is the reality,” she stated.
The ODM lawmaker faulted the Supreme Court saying its judges are very liberal and progressive where they can include LGBTQ rights into the Kenyan law but have guts to stop CDF fund.
Majority Leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah noted that, as far as he is concern, education through bursaries has been touching many lives across the country.
“Without CDF, there are children who will never access education through bursaries and there are children who would never have known school. If we need to anchor NG-CDF in the Constitution as proposed in the NADCO bill, so be it – not for the sake of MPs but for the people we represent,” remarked Ichung’wah.
CDF has been a major kitty disbursed to Members of Parliament for education and infrastructural development purposes in rural schools.
However, the court, recently, stopped the kitty and announced that it should be consolidated alongside other kitties for efficiency and accountability.
