Multimedia University Students go on Rampage Over Delayed HELB

Chrispen

Tuesday, October 3, 2023 –Hundreds of multimedia University students poured on the streets in Rongai Town in protest of delayed Higher Education Loans Board HELB disbursements.

During their ugly protests that brought activities at a standstill, the irate students were heard chanting ‘Haki Yetu’ slogans as they burnt tyres and blocked major highways in the area.

Among the roads they blocked include Magadi Road that leads into Ongata Rongai Town in Kajiado County.

Tyres and bonfires were lit with hundreds announcing that the struggle goes on until government heeds to their demands.

They would start engaging security officers in running battles that led to use of teargas in an attempt by the police to disperse the surging crowds.

Delayed HELB funds have seen students, mostly from low-income households, go through untold suffering even after the government promised to improve on time of releasing the funds.
