Friday, November 11, 2022 –Mumias Sugar Company in Kakamega has officially resumed operations following takeover by new investor, Sarbi Rai.
Kakamega Senator, Dr. Boni Khalwale, on Friday, November 11, made this confirmation following his visit that lasted for three hours at the Shibale-based factory.
“Today, I have spent three hours internalising the state of affairs at Mumias Sugar Company.
“I’m satisfied that the new investor, deserves support for his efforts in the revival of the company,” Dr. Khalwale announced.
The senator also confirmed that, upto now, the company had already managed to hire 800 new employees and the number may rise to 5,000 going into next year 2023.
As another round of hope following several attempts by the last regime of Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto to resuscitate the plant, farmers and residents from the region are already warming up for the benefits that comes with the roaring machines.
Before putting it under receivership, Mumias had reported a net loss of sh 15.10 billion in the 2018/19 financial year against the previous year’s loss of sh 6.80 billion.
This was happening despite the company having received a whopping sh sh 3.70 billion in bailout from the national government.
Company books of accounts showed that it had an outstanding debt amounting to sh 500 million; what saw the owners appoint an administrator in an effort to recover the amount.
This would see businessman Pongangipalli Venkata Ramana Rao take over in the receivership capacity; and later brought on board Sarbi Rai as an investor who had the required capacity to run the mill.
