Murkomen Receives JKIA Report, Announces a Raft of Changes

Friday, December 1, 2023 –Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary CS Kipchumba Murkomen has today received a report on the condition at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Making the confirmation today Friday December 1, Murkomen noted that he also received a similar report on Wilson Airport.

“I have today received an interim report on the State of JKIA, Moi and Wilson airports, after two weeks of thorough investigation by the technical committee,” he announced.

Following a meeting with the Committee, the CS used recommendations to direct the Kenya Airports Authority KAA to implement a series of changes among them fix leaking roofs and renovate walkways.

For instance, he directed that renovation of canopies on critical pathways and installation of a new roof for the entire terminal building be commenced.

Murkomen also wants reorganisation of the internal spaces at JKIA to reduce redundancies, and provide adequate sanitary facilities, efficient passenger processing and optimum ventilation and lighting.

“Immediate commissioning of the standby generators to provide primary backup. Provision of the additional secondary backup generator to Terminals 1A, 1E and Replacement of all defective screening equipment at the baggage handling system with 3D technology,” he added.

The Roads CS called for replacement of screening equipment with modern 3D technology as well as replacement of all rusted canopy structures.

Furthermore, he wants removal and disposal of any asbestos roofing material and replacement with environmentally friendly roofing materials as well as replacement of old underground cable to ensure reliability among other corrections.

The move to make corrections in major airports in the country was triggered by the cncern that many of them have leaking roofs and poor drainage system what has been giving visitors a hard time navigating through especially this rainy season.

CS Murkomen received what he referred to as an interim report on the state of JKIA, Moi and Wilson airports, after two weeks of thorough investigation by the technical committee he picked recently.
