Monday, December 18, 2023 -Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary CS Kipchumba Murkomen has urged motorists acrossthe country to be careful this festive season.
In his today (Monday) December 18 statement, the CS said road safety begins with everybody.
And to help reduce the number of fatlities, he launched two critical tools under the Usalama Barabarani Festive Season Campaign.
He said the two – the Kenya Highway Code and Learner Drivers’ Handbook, will be freely distributed and will go a long way in promoting responsible road use across the country.
‘I urge all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to familiarise themselves with the rules and be ambassadors of road safety while using the roads,” he noted.
He added that, over the last year, collective effort from across had helped reduce road traffic fatalities.
The CS further confirmed that from January 1st to December 7th, 2023, Kenya witnessed a commendable 8.11% decrease in lives lost due to road traffic injuries compared with the same period last year — down from 4,352 to 3,999.
“While this is progress, every life lost remains a poignant reminder that our work is far from over,” said Murkomen.
Notably, the reduction in deaths coincided with a concerning increase in the number of seriously injured individuals, suggesting that more work needs to be done to improve road safety.
