Tuesday, February 27, 2024 –Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has broken silence following yesterday visit by to Kenyan leaders President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
In his Monday evening statement, the head of State Uganda, Museveni noted that he had, actually, met with the two leaders from Kenya and together discussed Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union chairmanship.
“Also discussed was the declared candidacy of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the Africa Union Commission chairmanship,” stated Museveni.
The trio further discussed issues of mutual interest between Kenya and Uganda as well as the larger East Africa.
“I was happy to meet President Ruto and Rt. Hon. Odinga this afternoon at my farm in Kisozi. We discussed issues of mutual interest between our two countries and the East African Community. I welcome them,” stated President Museveni.
His Kenyan counterpart, Dr. William Ruto said, was glad to meet with Museveni to discuss trade between Kenya and Uganda.
“I am glad that the issues affecting the flow of petroleum products between Kenya and Uganda are being resolved. We have agreed on a way forward of sourcing and scheduling imports for the region in a manner that will ensure we achieve the most competitive pricing and maximum logistical efficiency. In my meeting with President Museveni,” noted Ruto.
Dr. Ruto also divulged plans by the two nations to allow construction of the long-awaited Eldoret-Kampala-Kigali oil pipeline.
“Today, we also discussed the need for the two countries to urgently pursue the design and construction of the earlier conceptualized Eldoret-Kampala-Kigali refined petroleum product pipeline,”he added.
The meeting among the three – Museveni, Ruto and Odinga – leaders came as a surprise as it had not been announced anywhere.
