Tuesday, April 20, 2021 -Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI boss George Kinoti has hinted at plans to summon Citizen Tv over their recent story on Police.
Reacting to the trending news about guns being hired to criminals by police – a series that was aired on Citizen Tv by Purity Mwambia on Sunday– Kinoti termed the piece ‘one sided’. He therefore charged that members of the Fourth Estate must always act professionally if they were to be taken serious.
He went on to urge media reporters, if they are sincere to their calling, to always collaborate with his office so that they can be accorded safety while in the field.
In his Tuesday afternoon press briefing on the Guns Galore expose’, the DCI said with proper working together, it is easier to correct any mess, if any, within the police service.
“I was never approached to collaborate in this kind of operation, this was a fantastic job. My only concern is what if something could have happened to those journalists? If it could have turned tragic…,” Kinoti said.

He continued to take issue with sections of Mwambia’s report saying some claims were aimed at painting police as a skewed enterprise in the eyes of the public which is not the case.
“We can only conclude that it was aimed at creating public pandemonium over the management of the security sector. AK47 is a prohibited firearm and should not be with civilians. Kenyans should help us ensure these firearms are completely eliminated from the wrong hands. Those who had possession of these firearms are the ones who know where they came from,” he noted.
He challenged whoever was behind the story saying she could have involved the DCI office in finding out who actually hires those guns out and from which station. This, according to Kinoti, could have brought this matter to a satisfactory rest.
“The firearm or handcuffs could have come from us but you could have given us an opportunity to investigate on where they came from,” added the DCI.
He therefore indicated that plans to have the reporter and his immediate bosses held responsible for clarity are inevitable.
“The damning allegations made in this report are extremely serious. It is also apparent that crimes relating to unlawful possession of firearms may have been committed in the context of this report. We shall therefore be asking the editorial director, Director Strategy Innovation and other relevant reporters of the Royal Media Services to at least come and give us more insight to this report in pursuit of the criminals who have been harbouring this weapons here,” stated Kinoti.
Weighing on the matter, Ballistic Expert Evans Mwongera defended that the mentioned fire arm in the Guns Galore investigative piece was from China and furthermore had no serial number on it hence very hard to directly link it to Kenyan police.
