Wednesday, March 1, 2023 –Most of the key welfare services at the Standard Group SG media house have been stopped, leaving the staff at crossroads.

Most staff who work at the Mombasa road-based headquarters can nolonger enjoy the breakfast, lunch and dinner they have been enjoying for decades when the giant media house was making profits and at the top of business in the country.

On Tuesday, March 1, staff working at the headquarters were all slapped with a bad-news-notice announcing suspension of key welfare service – among these services are meals always provided by the company to its staff.

The SG employees received a memo from the Human Resource Department HRD informing them of the discontinuation of important catering services.

“We wish to inform you that Cafeteria services are temporarily suspended. We are actively working to find a solution to ensure that your meal needs are met,” the memo read in part.

This move was attributed to the dire situation currently affecting the company which has no hopes of getting back to business anytime soon.

A source told this writer that the staff was advised to make alternative arrangements for their meals as the company continues to grapple with the biting financial crisis which has since forced most of the staff to go without salaries now the fifth month.

“In the meantime, we recommend that you make alternative arrangements for your meals. Apologies for the inconvenience caused,” the statement also read in part.

A source revealed that the staff working from the office were initially entitled to three meals, ranging from a 10:00AM tea break, 1:00PM lunch, 4:00PM tea break and 6:00PM dinner.

The staff, as usual, would pick a sh 270 meal ticket from the cafeteria and be served the food from the contracted caterers.

Moreover, the financial crisis has seen most employees resort to sleeping inside the offices owing to the an un resolved salary arrears.

To make the matters worse, so many of the seasoned journalists have already left the media house; among them those working in radio, Tv and newspaper staff departments most of who have chosen to join alternative media stations within the city.
