He seized the opportunity to further accuse it of burning a whopping sh 1 billion to prepare for the Mashujaa Day event that was celebrated in Kericho.

Speaking in Kajiado County over the weekend, Wandayi said, since taking power, Ruto’s administration has indicated its unwillingness to address the increasing cost of living despite promising this during campaigns.

“Cost of living is skyrocketing and theft is on the increase. Recently, they led Mashujaa Day which gobbled close to sh 1 billion only to end up killing innocent people at the Kericho Green Stadium,” he noted.

According to the ODM Party member, sh 500 million was used to carpet roads around Kericho while another sh 200 million was spent on renovating the stadium.

“It was muddy all over and over eight lives were lost and scores left hospitalized,” he added.

Interestingly, the minority leader wondered that no official statement had been released by government concerning the matter.

However, after the incident, President William Ruto was among a few leaders from Government who released heartfelt statement on the tragedy.

“My heart goes out to the families of the victims of the tragedy at the Kericho Green Stadium ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations. We extend our deepest condolences and pray for the quick recovery of the injured. Poleni sana,” he remarked.

A hot thermos flask burst out emitting hot steam contents which people thought was a killer detonation. They therefore ran into a stampede that claimed lives and left several injured.

“It was reported by Police Officers who were on duty at Kericho Green Stadium today 20/10/2023 at 0300 hours where Mashujaa Celebration is to take place, that there was a stampede caused by a lady who was selling tea outside the stadium who accidentally spilled hot tea in the fire near gate “C” along the public road, as a result, members of public panicked and mistook it to be a teargas thrown to them,” read a police report.
