Oparanya: I was not Arrested

Friday, September 1, 2023 –Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has today claimed that he was not arrested by the DCI officers as had been reported earlier.

Addressing this matter for the first time since the day he was raided and his computers with cash taken away by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI officers, the former Kakamega governor has said when the electronics were seized, he was forced to accompany the officers to their boss seeking to get them back.

“They took my phones including those of my children and they told me to see their boss if I wanted them back. I followed them to Integrity Center to get the phones of my children back and when I got there, it was reported that I was apprehended,” Mr. Oparanya stated.

Talking about the sh 2 million he had stashed in his home safe, the Kakamega politician noted that it was meant to be converted into dollars for his child’s school fees.

The two-time county boss further mentioned that his child schools in the United States of America U.S.A and the money was for the school fees.

“I had sh 2 million for one of my children who was going abroad. My child studies in America and I was going to buy dollars,” he stated.

The ex-governor also revealed that the EACC officers sought to know his business engagements with the former premier, Raila Odinga.

He, however, told the officers that he is not engaged in any form of financial business with the Azimio la Umoja boss.

The twin raid at both his Nairobi and Kakamega homes has seen the politician describe it as ill-intended and political.

Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission EACC, in their statement after raiding the two homes, said it is seeking to unravel the embezzlement of county monies to the tune of sh 1.3 billion under question.

This amount was reportedly misappropriated during his leadership at the Kakamega County headquarters.
