Wednesday, June 14, 2023 –Paul Mackenzie’s lawyers have thrown in the towel citing constant frustrations by the State.
Two of his lawyers, on Wednesday June 14, recused themselves from his(Mackenzie’s) case citing too many battles some which made it difficult to access the cult-leader in police cells.
Lawyers George Kariuki and Elisha Komora both claimed that they have never been at peace since taking up the case of the Kilifi pastor and his accomplices.
Speaking on the matter, the duo seized the opportunity to lay their blame on government which it accused of interference and blocking justice for the accused.
Speaking on the condition of their client, Lawyer Kariuki divulged that the accused have been sleeping on cold floor now about 60 days.
This makes some of the reasons, he noted, that could leave Mackenzie dead even before court trial commences. They argued.
Now Mackenzie has been left with Advocate Wycliffe Makesembo who indicated that he was up to the task to represent his client until justice prevails.
He, nevertheless, explained that the government was keen on making sure the case takes a longer time until Mackenzie and his co-accused give up.
Today at Shanzu Law Courts, Mackenzie, his wife Rhodha Mumbua and 16 other suspects came looking frail.
It would emerge that they had staged a hunger strike in police cells to pile pressure on the State to allow hearing of their cases.
According to Senior Prosecution Council Jami Yamina, 16 of the suspects were on a 10-day hunger strike in solidarity with Pastor Mackenzie’s radical teachings.
“We fear that some of them will lose their lives while in custody. The rest of them went on a hunger strike 10 days ago and refused to eat or drink water.
“We have to address this matter now because we do not know if these people will be alive tomorrow,” Yamina stated.
Days ago, Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki affirmed that Mackenzie will not get out of jail no matter what he does.
“He will age in it. We pray that God gives him more years to see Kenya’s security prosper.
“He will not get out of jail… Mackenzie will meet the wrath of God after jail,” a fire-spitting Kindiki stated.
