Sunday, March 26, 2023 – The Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on Sunday, March 26, defended the police against public wrath amid the ongoing Azimio protests.
Speaking during his press conference in Nairobi, IG Koome castigated the opposition camp over the public naming and shaming of a police officer in Maseno accused of gunning down a third-year university student during the kick off of demonstrations last Monday March 20.
“They have put a constable all over social media, why don’t you target the IG? Face me, I will deal with you!” The IG posed.
The Police Boss called out the Odinga-led opposition over intimidating junior officers following their threats to file a case against Nairobi Regional Commander Adamson Bungei at the International Criminal Court ICC.
The IG also defended the National Police Service NPS from accusations that they had selected to side with the government during demonstrations when the Constitution says the police must be balanced in providing security.
“I do not even know what the server is. Why do they want to bring down the country because of a phenomenon that the common citizen does not even comprehend?
“Those are political issues that need political solutions. But when it comes to matters of security, I have a mandate as the IG to ensure the protection of property and life and I will not sleep on that job,” Koome affirmed.
He seized the opportunity to assure those living in Nairobi that the Nairobi Central Business District CBD would be secured ahead of the planned mass action.
And in a direct response to these remarks, ex-State Ombudsman, Otiende Amollo, remainded the police of their Constitutional mandate when protests are taking place.
He mentioned that the IG should be served with a copy of the Constitution, and in particular, Articles 37 & 244(C).
