Thursday, July 6, 2023 –Police department has confirmed shooting at least 20 Alshabaab militants in Mandera County.
Making this confirmation today Thursday July 6, the National Police Service Special Operations Group (SOG), disclosed that the twenty militants had staged a fierce attack on police patrols when its department countered.
The incident took place at Ogorwen location in Mandera County when the Alshabaab terror group attempted to break into a police routine patrol in the evening hours of Wednesday July 5.
“Preliminary investigations indicated that the resulting heavy gunfire exchange between the officers on patrol and the militants left 20 militants fatally injured and eight NPS officers injured.
“As a Service, we commend our Officers for their dedication to duty and reiterate our commitment to enhancing national security.
In the melee, police managed to recover assorted weapons from the militants who had already been neutralized by fire.
This move is coming at the time Interior Cabinet Ministry led by Prof Kithure Kindiki promised to do all that it can to end Alshabaab terrorism in the North Eastern Region.
In addition to his orders, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior also declared Turkana Forest a crime scene and ordered ordinary citizens to start leaving ahead of another sting operation by his police officers.
“We have made a firm decision to deal with these criminals and eliminate them completely. We have noticed that they often return to their hideout a few days after an operation by the National Police Service,” Kindiki ordered.
In his address, Prof Kindiki stated that his Ministry had received all the required intelligence from the crime scenes and police would deal with the same firmly.
Kindiki, on the same note, ordered the continued closure of the Kenya-Somali border amid these rise in attacks.
