Tuesday, May 11, 2021 -National Police Spokesman Charles Owino has been transferred to another position in drastic changes announced on Monday May 10 morning.
The vocal spokesperson will be serving as the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms KNFP’s deputy director.
Homenews.co.ke has learnt that KNFP is a committee within the police which serves to coordinate various ministries and departments of the government with focus on small weapons in the country.
Owino, as the spokesperson, was known for being vocal on defending police activities in the country. He would be heard defending police anytime there is a public uproar against them. His appearance on tv shows and interviews saw him receive both backlash and accolades from members of the public.
Recently, he was on record defending police officers accused of using excessive force to implement Covid-19 directives as issued by the President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Ministry of Health.
“Let us obey the law, maintain social distance. The reason why we have a curfew is to ensure that we manage this situation appropriately,” he stated.
Owino who has served the spokesperson position since 2015 is also eyeing the Siaya gubernatorial seat through ODM Party in the next general elections.
Reports from the ground indicate that, in that race, he will contend with ODM bigwigs like James Aggrey Orengo, Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi and Siaya Deputy Governor James Okumbe in their party primaries.
