Friday, June 23, 2023 –President William Ruto’s speech in the ongoing youth on climate change summit in France received a standing ovation.
In the video clip he shared on his 5.9 follower Twitter handle, the head of State was seen making a blow-by-blow address on how inequality had brought the many challenges in the African continent.
He noted that, apart from climate crisis, there was also an urgency to address financial inequalities around the world with fairness.
Ruto argued that climate crisis was getting worse by day with millions of lives lost in the process of all these.
“The solution is in our hands and you are the solution. We have the capacity, finances and the technology to act together and get things right.
“It requires solidarity, fairness and equity and when I see you here, I see the great future of all those possibilities,” President Ruto said amid applause from the youthful audience.
Ruto called for a global financial system that doesn’t pit the West against the East or the developed against the developing.
“We require a financial system which is fair, transparent; and It’s not too much to ask for fairness; that doesn’t disadvantage anybody against another,” Ruto added.
His speech which was also shared by a number of his Cabinet members among them CS Moses Kuria, also received comments from other Kenyans.
“President Ruto defeated Uhuru Kenyatta and Kenyan system, now he is daring powers. Is he punching above his weight? Time will tell. Kenya is now a global subject. Kaende Kaende,” Makau Muli reacted.
On the sidelines of the summit, the president and other African leaders called for a new multilateral climate change action mechanism financed from global carbon taxes on fossil fuel, aviation, marine transport, among other transactions, to fund decarbonisation, adaptation and nature protection and regeneration.
They agreed that, such is a bold step that the globe requires to protect environment and secure a sustainable future for everyone.
This was the discussion during a round-table on The Alliance for Green Infrastructure in the ongoing New Global Financing Pact Summit taking place in Paris, France.
