President Ruto Assents to Finance Bill 2023

Monday, June 26, 2023 –President William Ruto has signed into law the Finance Bill 2023 after it was approved in the National Assembly last Wednesday June 21.

Ruto made this move today Monday June 26, in an event that was held in the Statehouse and attended by a number of his cabinet members and the Attorney General.

Also present in the function was National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah among other senior State officials.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Chief Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also witnessed the signing of the document, as well.

Equally, Dr. Ruto used the opportunity to approve the Supplementary Appropriations (No. 2) Bill, 2023 warranting the additional spending of sh 22.9 billion by the National Government from the Consolidated Fund kitty.

“This results in the reduction of overall expenditure by Ksh25.5 billion compared to the revised total National Government expenditure approved in the Supplementary Appropriations (No. 1), Act 2023.

“The reduction comprises an increase in recurrent amounting to sh 9.5 billion and rationalisation of development spending by Ksh35 Billion,” partly read the report.

Homenews.co.ke also learnt that, apart from AG Justine Muturi, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u and his Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo also witnessed the Bill assenting exercise.

The controversial 2023 Bill passed in Parliament despite fierce opposition from the Azimio la Umoja brigade led by Raila Odinga.

Mr. Odinga has since promised to subject the William Ruto-led administration to countrywide protests over increased taxation.

According to their recent press briefing held by Narc-Kenya Party leader Martha Karua, their first meeting is scheduled to take place at Kamukunji Grounds where they will address supporters with further directives.

This could signify return of bi-weekly demonstrations.
