Wednesday, May 24, 2023 –Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has been trending all day long following his animated address on new housing plan by Kenya Kwanza government.
While explaining the contentious housing levy contribution under the Finance Bill, 2023, Mr Hinga who was fielding questions from journalists, would be seen struggling to prove a point on the levyso that to reduce what he referred to as misinformation.
Kenyans would then start trolling him some pointing out how the housing plan in the new Finance Bill was also giving some government officials a hard time to sell.
The Democratic Action Party DAP-Kenya led by Party leader Eugene Wamalwa linked Hinga’s address to Sir Gregor MacGregor – the most audacious Fraud in History which, it claimed, did a bit better than him.
“Even Sir Gregor MacGregor the most audacious Fraud in History did better. This one trying to force the Housing Fund fraud on Kenyans couldn’t explain or withstand the questions from Journalists. Kenyans must beware of the ponzi scheme being forced on them and say No,” DAP-Kenya tweeted.
Journalist Gabriel Oguda would share an excerpt of a video in which Hinga can be seen sweating pounds and, at some point, hitting inadvertently, a glass of water which was resting on his address desk.
“Tears in my eye,” he commented on the video which has since gone viral.
Addressing journalists at State House in Nairobi on Wednesday, Mr. PS Hinga said, the levy will serve as assurance to investors that the government of Kenya was serious on the housing topic.
“Some of you are asking why can’t we make this voluntary? But when it is driven by law, if I’m going to get a billion a month, it means I can go out there and call investors and tell them that as long as the law is there, I will be collecting money after three years,” he said.
On his part, President William Ruto emphasized that this initiative did not emerge without planning. It was articulated and outlined in the manifesto, the foundational document on which he was elected by the Kenyan people.
