Saturday, September 2, 2023 –Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, today Saturday September 2, joined COTU fraternity to mourn organisation’s Chair Rajab Mwondi who died weeks ago.
Odinga accompanied by ODM Party Deputy Wycliffe Oparanya arrived in Vihiga County where they were received by Secretary General Francis Atwoli.
The Azimio leaders arrived in the burial of the former COTU chairman who died on Wednesday, August 23 while undergoing treatment at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu Town.
On passing on, Atwoli described Mwondi as a brother, leader and true friend who helped run the labour organisation to greater achievements.
“Bro. Mwondi was not just a brother or a leader, he was a true friend, a mentor, and a guiding light throughout my journey in the labour movement.
“His wisdom, compassion, and tireless efforts have transformed the lives of countless workers, elevating our organization to new heights. We will forever remember his tenacity in the face of challenges, his humility in the face of success, and his ability to unite us all under a common purpose,” statement from Atwoli read in part.
Since 1986, Mwondi tirelessly advocated for fair wages, safe working conditions and the overall well-being of Kenyan workers.
He served as COTU-K’s chairman-general for over two decades and doubled up as a General-secretary of the Printing, Publishing Paper Manufacturers and Allied Workers Union KUPRIPUPA.
