Saturday, September 7, 2024 –Opposition leader Raila Odinga has criticised presidents who are in China for a special summit invitation by the Chinese government.
The orange Democratic Movement ODM Party boss, just after jetting back from China where he had gone to meet Africa leaders, has said the move for the leaders to fly from their home to China is not correct and must be reversed as soon as possible.
Speaking from Bondo his backyard, Mr. Odinga noted that the Kenyan delegation and other African leaders who flew to China cannot justify why they attended the event in China when the vise versa should be happening.
“I believe that Africa is punching below its weight and that Africa can do better. I have seen African leaders moving around like you see, I have just come from a summit dubbed FOCAC, where almost 40 heads of state were,” Raila claimed.
He added that his main mission when he wins the next African Union elections in February next year is to restore dignity to Africa by making sure Western countries and foreign partners come in Africa and not the other way round.
“But I say, why should African leaders go to China? Chinese should be the ones coming to Africa, so these are some of the things that we want to reverse.”
Odinga promised to spearhead drastic reforms so that the continent can start hosting European nations and other developed powers at home.
“Africa can punch at its level, and this is what I want to see. I have already said what I want to see in Africa and what Africa can do. Africa has been undermined, exploited but we do not want to continue whining,” Mr. Odinga firmly stated.
The AUC candidate who is running for the organisation’s top seat spoke this despite having been part of the team from Kenya which attended the summit.
He flew there to lobby for his candidature in the AUC race slated February next year.
