Sunday, February 5, 2023 –Former Prime Minister Raila Odinag has jumped in to defend the founding lady mama Margaret Kenyatta against attacks from government.
Addressing mammoth crowds in Kibra today Sunday February 5 afternoon, a charged up Odinga hit hard at President William Ruto together with his deputy Rigathi Gachagua whom he faulted for exchanging with the founding first lady.
Raila stated that Ruto and Gachagua ought to have some respect to a lady who has been at the center of leadership in the country for long – since independence.
“Yesterday, Mama Ngina came out to speak on the issue because they really insulted her so bad. She was arrested during Mau Mau and spent time in Kamiti. You have no respect yet she is the age of your grandmother. This is a shame,” Odinga stated.
The Azimio la Umoja coalition leader added that the Constitution of the country excuses presidents from paying certain taxes; this he reckoned was passed in 1963 and started being enforced in 1969.
“The law initially only exempted Jomo Kenyatta but when Moi took over, he added his name in 1981,” Odinga again stated.
He went ahead to accuse Ruto and Gachagua of being ignorant of the law since that law was amended in 1982 not only to exempt heirs of the presidents but every Kenyan from paying tax on an inherited estate.
Yesterday, Mama Margret Kenyatta responded to the State on the tax evasion claims saying she was ready to give away any property and wealth the government thinks has pending taxes.
She argued that there is always a channel along which the government can reclaim its taxes from defaulters and not in political forums to portray a picture of busy state officers.
